Everyone is aware of Batman’s beginning story: young Bruce Wayne’s folks Had Been murdered, inspiring him to at some point turn out to be a gloomy vigilante to offer protection to the streets of Gotham City.

However few folks know what Bruce Wayne’s life was once like when he was a teen.

All that is about to alter, due to bestselling author Marie Lu‘s upcoming YA novel Batman: Nightwalker. The book follows a teenage Bruce Wayne, on the cusp of inheriting Wayne Firms and his guardian’s fortune. After a run-in with the police requires Bruce to do community provider at Arkham Asylum, the Soon-to-be Dark Knight meets Madeleine Wallace, a brilliant killer related to the Nighwalkers, a bunch terrorizing Gotham City. Quickly Bruce is pulled into a global of deception as he tries to unravel the mystery of Madeleine, a woman who could also be his worst enemy.

Whereas the book does not hit cabinets until January, you can now see the novel’s cover in all its brooding teen vigilante glory. MashReads ALSO spoke to Lu about Batman, overlaying an iconic persona, and what readers can look ahead to.

What drew you to Batman? Were you an important fan before?

My first exposure to the rest Batman was Batman: The Animated Series! It was once my introduction not just to a superhero, However to a nuanced character, and from then on, I was hooked. I Don’t assume I’ve ever agreed to the rest as quickly as I did to this mission when my agent first approached me about it.

What was once it like reworking Batman for a new medium, from comics to YA?

I didn’t grow up with comedian books, so entering into the territory of Batman was once incredibly daunting for me. Things that will work actually well in photograph form might come throughout as overdone or under-baked in a novel, and vice versa.

One Of my greatest hurdles used to be Trying To get into Bruce Wayne’s headspace and consider his thought process. It Can Be done so another way in graphic type — in a non-illustrated novel, that you would be able to’t deliver mood by means of a in moderation drawn expression or colour palette, or via Batman’s looming silhouette against the Night Time. He’s a personality so desirable (pun supposed) for illustration! How do I inform his story with out seeing his presence on the web page? Trying To recreate him with simplest text was once a problem.

As a author, what are some of the challenges and opportunities of working with such an iconic persona?

An Interesting Factor to me about Batman is that there are not any tales advised about Bruce Wayne as a young person.

Everyone knows about Bruce as a toddler and how he lost his oldsters, But then we leap in the narrative to him as a totally realized grownup, navigating an grownup world with adult issues as a longtime billionaire.

But Bruce’s teenage life is a black gap. As this kind of high-profile kid, what used to be it like for him to lose his parents? To have his belief dollars open for the primary time? How did he cope with having journalists path him around when he used to be so young? Did he have chums who betrayed him at school, or sucked up to him because of his wealth and fame? How did he navigate the challenges of adolescence?

I Discovered it an intimidating and exciting challenge to sort out questions like this about this type of little recognized a part of a widely known (and far loved!) character’s existence, especially earlier than he becomes the Darkish Knight.

Are You Able To provide us a teaser: Are there any surprises we must are expecting from this new ebook?

Essentially The Most fun I had on this book used to be creating a new villain to problem Bruce! She’s young, she’s in Arkham Asylum, and she’s a mystery. I Hope readers have as just right a time reading about Bruce’s interactions together with her as I did writing them.
