The Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government, fighting a debt burden of over Rs. 2 lakh crore, celebrated their newly-crowned champions in grand style. From two sets of gold chains saying ‘Bengal loves you’, to custom-made cake-sandesh, shawls, the state government spent Rs. 45 lakh on the celebrations. But Kolkata’s victory party failed to amuse critics, many calling it an embarrassing tamasha at the cost of the taxpayer.

Chief minister explained why she wanted to felicitate the “golden boys”. “They have made us proud. Bengal is the cultural capital of the country. KKR’s win has given us an opportunity to shout out our presence in cricket also,” said Mamata Banerjee.

Indeed, the victory was a creditable achievement. But did the government overreact a bit? Chennai Super Kings have won this tournament twice. Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals too have their share of glory. They never celebrated in such a extravagant manner.

In Kolkata it was different and it was a Trinamool Congress show all the way as the government extended a red carpet for Bengal’s brand ambassador. From Railway Minister Mukul Roy to state sports minister Madan Mitra and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim — all were present.

A cash-strapped government spent a huge some of money for the winners of a domestic tournament and life almost came to a standstill in the rush hour. Many people complained.

  2. Particularly, after the start of election campaigns for W Bengal polls, the Minister had not attended her duties in the biggest public Sector undertaking that operates separate national budget! In 2009-10 the number deaths due to accidents was 225 while by January this year, the death toll had risen to 336!

She had done nothing to curb the repeat accidents costing precious lives due to mismanagements, lack of staff in important posts and failure to fill up vacancies in time! Scores of files for filling vacancies by appointments are said to be lying unatttended by Mamata. Even after result of W Bengal election was known and she decided to move to the State, the Railway Miny post was not given up in time, with the result top level decisions remained seriously held up!

The uncontrolled pulling of alarm chains by passengers in states like UP is said to cause imbalance in fast moving trains! The serious breach of rules by passengers is utterly left unchecked! Also overloading of cargo in goods trains is said to cause weakening of the tracks. Sub standard ‘sleepers’ also are said to be a reason for the dislocation of tracks.. These issues have now to be attended by her successor who had been belatedly allocated the reign of the Ministry!

The coalition dharma had made the PM utterly helpless to question any inaction by his colleagues even if it cost the lives of people in hundreds or erosion of national wealth by lakhs of crores!

Who in your opinion is responsible for the loss of lives by rail accidents? Do share your views.

  3. I created a page on Facebook but I want to delete it. How do you delete it.

  4. I somewhat feel this is a feminist government coming to power in West Bengal.

I need to be able to set my entire facebook to private so that only those on my friends list can view it and any of my pictures. I have been trying for hours to figure this out, I thought it was already on friends only and yet someone NOT on my friends list stole pictures of my daughter. Please help!
Also, I have time line not the original layout. I can’t find the “Edit Profile” option anywhere.

  9. I deactivated my Facebook and it showed me a list of 5 friends who “miss me”. How does Facebook generate that list? Is it based on who you interact with, or who looks at your account? Some of the people are people I barley talk to on Facebook.
