How could the US seize Kim Dotcom (founder of Megaupload) after his arrest, if he’s a Dutch citizen living in New Zealand? I’m unsure of the legal grounds backing his US detention.

I mean, surely US jurisdiction doesn’t extend to New Zealand, yet Dotcom was arrested under a US allegation, and moreover the arrest was on grounds of a copyright claim against a company based in Hong Kong. I fail to see the connection between the apparent crimes of Megaupload and its sister sites, which all seem to be international, and the US actions in retaliation.

Forgive my poor knowledge of the US legal system. I’m Australian.
